I still remember the first time I watched the World Cup. It was 2006 and I got swept up into the magnificent event. I remember being at the local pool club minutes before the Final was about to start and telling my parents that I wanted to go home and watch the game. I don't remember much about the event as a whole but I do recall being enamored with it and learning the correct headbutt techniques.
The 2010 World Cup is much clearer in my mind. It began near the end of my freshmen year in High School. My friends and I wouldn't allow our teachers to stand in our way and we would watch the games on phones or just listen to the radio instead of whatever Shakespeare lecture we were supposed to be tuned into.
Every four years, I get wrapped up into soccer and try to learn as much as I can so I can seem knowledgable and make fun of my friends who don't know who Neymar is, however it seems that I have read too much this year.
There have been a multitude of articles that have signified how corrupt FIFA and its president Sepp Blatter have been in the last few years. They have taken bribes when deciding what countries get to host the event and there are reports of score-fixing.
The 2014 World Cup will begin in two days in Brazil and Brazil isn't ready. There are still problems with the stadiums, the transportation systems and protesters who want the event to pack its bags and go away.
Having the World Cup in Brazil and even Qatar in 2022 are both mistakes and people should be fed up with FIFA.
Especially in Qatar, there have already been hundreds of deaths from heat exhaustion and unsafe work conditions in trying to build these massive stadiums.
The World Cup may be a global game but it's run by the broadcast television networks who pay an absurd amount of money for this month-long event. Thus, even in Brazil, the lower classes will not be able to see these games in person as they have become so expensive. Instead, they will just watch them on TV like everyone else.
My point is that if even the local citizens at the World Cup's location can't see the games, why go through so much trouble in creating new stadiums in obscure countries. There are many countries that could host the World Cup tomorrow if they needed to including Spain, England, France and the United States. The stadiums, transportation systems and safety precautions are already set and there would be less controversy and trouble.
FIFA needs to begin to get its act together and learn from its mistakes. Four years after the South African World Cup, all that is left are empty stadiums and the same problems before the games started. Move the World Cup to an established and thriving country or the needless deaths and problems that have taken place in Brazil and even Qatar will continue.
